Is Christmas Pagan or Christian???

Posted by justanotherstayathomemom on December 4, 2008

I like Christmas…not for the presents…although those are very nice…but for the decorations and the great music and the weather and it’s a great reason to get together with your family and friends.  Do I have a Christmas tree? Yes..we actually bought a new, 9 1/2 foot artificial one and even bought new lights to go on it…they have 16 diffrent functions…oh yeah!!  Now, do I believe the Christmas tree has ANYTHING to do with the birth of Christ, Yeshua?  NO…I think they are pretty and cool and festive and that is as far as I take it.  The Christmas celebration is pagan in nature, but so is Easter…does that mean I don’t celebrate the resurrection of Yeshua?  NO…it means we have fun collecting eggs and our son has fun finding them and that is as far as it goes….it’s just something fun for the kids….I know, you are saying that if the world does it then we, as  Christians, shouldn’t be doing it… I mean rabbits, eggs, fertility….it has paganism written all over it.  But, I digress, so back to the main subject….

Yes, Christmas is a pagan holiday.  Constantine mixed pagan and Christian holidays long ago so that they would stop killing us and make life better for everyone….

Now, I know the tree has absolutely nothing to do with the birth of Christ…I know that Christ was probably born sometime in the summer…i also know that for me, this is just something fun to do with my family.   I was gonna nix santa this year and let my 3.5 yr old know that he wasn’t real, but hubby likes the santa thing, so…he will figure it out.  Children grow up way to fast in this day and age and are asked to look at things and hear things that they are way to young to understand.  Santa doens’t bother me…he’s cute.  He makes a great decoration.   I don’t put to much thought into it.    I know the history and as long as I make it a priority to tell my sons that this is the day we celebrate Jesus’ birth, that is all that matters….we can discuss semantics later.  When they are older.

As for when Yeshua was really born, there are two schools of thought…read this neat article

it gives both arguments for a summer birth and a winter birth for Christ.

As for me and my house?  we will celebrate Christmas for what it is… a time to hang with family and friends and give gifts and sing Happy Birthday to Jesus…I am even gonna make Him a cake!!!  KEWL, huh?

If you don’t have a tree, more power to ya, but kids grow up so very fast.  I prefer mine to have some childhood while they are still children.
